Step 1: Collect Activities

The app is about keeping track of how you spend your time: Who was it done for, what was the project, what was done, when, and for how long. The first step is to simply take out your phone, start the app (tap 1) and then press the add button (tap 2).

I recently revisited the iTunes App Store with an eye to the state of the educational market. Below is a comparison table of the iTunes App Store Education category in 2011 vs 2009.

The Clear Speech iOS apps were authored by Judy Gilbert and developed by Cambridge University Press (iTunes link). As Press employee, I facilitated the software specification with Judy and Editorial, and oversaw the design and development process. The apps provide excellent listening practice for English learners through fun games: Ball Toss, Syllable Ball, Push the Blob, and Stop or Flow.

I take it back, I'm switching to OmniFocus. Last year I decided Life Balance was the leader. It had been since I'd used a Treo, excepting a brief flirt with OmniFocus while it was the only iPhone 3 task software around.

Last night I was thrilled to see that the iTunes App Store included in its featured apps section a group of "Apps for foreign language learning". When I clicked through, I found an interesting list of apps.

Use the Project Manager's Stopwatch to quickly collect time on task and easily export that info: You're 3 taps from the phone being off to using the app for tracking. This utility app is perfect for busy project managers, consultants, and efficiency enthusiasts. Created by a PMP who prefers to not do paperwork.

I wish I had found this one earlier-- The Economist on iPad (http://www.economist.com/digital/apps). It gets a lot right.

First off, there's no crazy overpricing or divorcing from the print subscription like we find elsewhere. Instead, if you subscribe to print then you also subscribe to web and to iPad. Thanks Economist!

Really we can stop there-- a fine publication that lets you read the content you've subscribed to regardless of what screen you're in front of (and yes, a page is a screen).

PlainText is an iOS app with a tagline of "DropBox text editing". It's very useful just for the simple text editing, although there are many alternatives for that one feature. What's much more interesting is its reliable DropBox integration. This feature allows an interesting and effective integration of mobile into workflow patterns.
